America's Finest City Homebrew Competition

NEWS RELEASE   Home Brewing Competition in San Diego

San Diego's QUAFF (Quality Ale and Fermentation Fraternity) homebrewing club hosted its 16th annual America's Finest City Homebrew Competition on February 22-23, 2008.  74 brewers submitted 305 entries, covering every one of the 28 homebrewing styles, from light lagers, to substantial barleywines, to meads and ciders.

Judging was held at St Dunstan's Church in San Diego, where 58 judges rated the beers against the strict style guidelines published by the American Homebrewers Association (AHA) and the Beer Judge Certification Program (BJCP).  27 stewards and numerous other support personnel helped the judging go smoothly.   Judges and stewards earned BJCP points in this AHA-sanctioned event.

A total of 83 ribbons were awarded to style winners for first, second, and third places.  In addition, several special awards were presented:

1.  Best of Show Beer:  Julian Shrago of Garden Grove, CA for an American IPA; runners-up were Greg and Liz Lorton of Carlsbad for a Belgian gueuze.

2.  Best of Show Mead/Cider:  Harold Gulbransen of San Diego took both first and second with two meads; one with citrus honey and one with ligonberries.

3.  Brewing Machine, for the brewer with the most awards in the competition: Eric Holden of Temecula, with runner-up Dion Hollenbeck of Cortez, CO.
