Bottle Acceptance Rules

An entry is a set of TWO bottles from a single batch of beer, cider or mead. (1st round plus best of show). All entries must be handcrafted products, containing ingredients available to the general public, and made using private equipment by hobbyist brewers (i.e., no use of commercial facilities or Brew on Premises operations, supplies, etc.).

In order to provide anonymity of brewer's bottles during the judging, its important they do not contain distinguishing characteristics, therefore we REQUIRE that all entries meet the following guidelines:

Bottle Acceptance Rules

  • Each entry consists of two (2) brown or green glass, 10 to 14 ounce bottles of homebrew (this means no bombers!).
  • Each bottle has no label (adhesive or painted) or other distinguishing marks.
  • Bottles with raised glass lettering are discouraged but permitted.
  • Each bottle is capped with an unmarked silver or gold cap.
  • Use a permanent black marker to obliterate any and all words or pictures on the caps.
  • No flip top or screw cap bottles.
  • Corked bottles meeting the above standards are permitted provided they are capped over or have a cage retaining the cork.
  • Entry forms should be attached to bottles with a rubber band only; glue and/or tape are unacceptable and will result in disqualification of the entry.
  • Non-compliant bottles will be disqualified.
  • Any non-compliant bottles received may be judged (at the discretion of the competition organizers) but are not eligible for mini-best of show or awards.

Bottles will not be returned to contest entrants.

Packing and Shipping

Carefully pack your entries in a sturdy box. Line the inside of your carton with a plastic trash bag. Partition and pack each bottle with adequate packaging material. Please do not over pack!

Write clearly: "Fragile. This Side Up." on the package. Please refrain from using "messy" packaging materials such a Styrofoam "peanuts" or pellets; please use packaging material such as bubble wrap.

Enclose each of your bottle labels in a small zip-top bag before attaching to their respective bottles. This way it makes it possible for the organizer to identify specifically which entry has broken if there is damage during shipment.

Every reasonable effort will be made to contact entrants whose bottles have broken to make arrangements for sending replacement bottles.

If you live in the United States, please note that it is illegal to ship your entries via the United States Postal Service (USPS). Private shipping companies have the right to refuse your shipment if they are informed that the package contains glass and/or alcoholic beverages. Be aware that entries mailed internationally are often required by customs to have proper documentation. These entries might be opened and/or returned to the shipper by customs' officials at their discretion. It is solely the entrant's responsibility to follow all applicable laws and regulations.
